The deadline for the draw is June 30, but this is 3 days after 8th Grade students leave and graduate. Is there any way the draw could be made on the 26th or 27th, or even earlier to take account of many schools holding their graduation several days before the end of the school year?

I know many students (certainly in my school) won’t have access to the Internet during the vacation and would really appreciate knowing before they break for summer.

From what I’ve read, these devices work well if all of the machines on the network support the new, faster standard. Otherwise, you’re stuck, going at the speed of the slowest computer. Sort of like being an express train on a local track, or caught behind a slow driver in the fast lane. As usual, Apple has itsAirPort Extreme one of the first products in this space. As an added bonus, you can connect a USB hard drive to the base station for sharing files over a network. Pretty nifty.

They actually have done quite a bit of work to make the screen what it is–it’s designed to work without a backlight and be visible when the sun’s beating down. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by just how nicely the text renders.

Don’t be afraid of breaking it by going into the code–it’s a new machine and will therefore have bugs that need to be fixed. I don’t think there’s anything you could do to “brick” that machine. (Sometimes it’s possible to make an electronic device worthless when you do a firmware update, but I think these devices are past that stage now.)

This computer is really something. A little over a day with it and i am in awe. At first i was confused to know end, but after playing around with it for a few minutes i got use to the interface. The first thing about the computer is that I like its size. Its nice and small which makes it easier to carry than my ibook. Also i like the screen. The resolution is amazing, in my opinion. One big question i have is how to go about messing with Sugar on a coding level. I really don’t wish to make a mistake and end up breaking the thing. I would like to see if maybe i could try making something to practice my notice programming skills.

I believe that consuming Vista right now is not the best idea, especially when major companies still have old computers. It would have been wise for Windows to notify these businesses so they could have the upgrades needed for Vista Business. But at least this will drive the rest of the consumers that are either gamers or home based needs to upgrade their systems, thus having a win-win situation.

It's posts like these that make me glad I'm on a Mac! While I've heard stories about viruses and spyware that might infiltrate the Mac, I've never seen one of these programs first hand. My impression is that the platform itself is more secure by design, since you have to authenticate before giving programs permission to install. I've seen example exploits--for example, one firm posted a terminal shell that has a .jpg file extension. If you click on the application and run it, the script lists the contents of your user directory--presumably a hacker could write something that would delete the files of your directory. (Ouch!) but you'd still have to download the file and click on it. (Not a good idea to download things you don't know about and trust.) Here's what Apple has to say about viruses on a Mac. For fun, watch the Ad. No, I'm not paid by Apple to say these things, but I am a fan.

I have just completed my second day at UBS….much more exciting then the first. In the afternoon I met with Richard Johnson and we went over Excel Sheets, using the Excel Wizard, and using tools such as linkpics which allow you to import tables and graphs into PowerPoint presentations and create a symbolic link between both the presentation and Excel Sheet. Since we finished early we took a tour of the iT department and I found that very exciting, learning the process of creating software, putting them into beta test mode, then deploying and expecting feedback. I learned many things here that I hope I will be able to apply to the school environment, as I expect I will.

So today I started with Allen Brady and we started off with an overview of the company, how it worked and how it utilises it’s time and its employee’s time. I observed how he manages (along with many other managers) people schedules, payroll, time_in and out. One thing I learned was that the company had expectations for employees, such as project commences and terminations and also expected time in and time out. This might be a good idea to take back to my schools MOUSE Squad as I edit and modify the MOUSE Squad hour log system for 2006-2007.

After lunch (which was very good), I sat with Mr. Cherry and he showed me how his does the scheduling. After observing it for a couple hours i realised how complex this system really is. I noticed how much relied on Microsoft Access and I never thought that anyone would use this tool to such a high extent. I found many commonalities with Mr. Cherry and was able to connect with his UNIX/LINUX Past. Today was a blast.

If I had access to this valuable resource, I would use it when I am in need of quick reference, when I am confused with a concept in the Server World and also in time of emergency. Since I have always tried to become more of an independent learner, I looked for resources that would be able to teach me. Because this resource has a wide array of eBooks everywhere and I am able to search through hundreds of books rapidly, this reference will have the capability of making me a much more powerful learner and teacher.

As background, in partnership with O'Reilly, MOUSE offered select students and staff a 30 day trial ofSafari Books Online Which is "the leading electronic reference library for programmers and IT professionals. MOUSE plans to expand the trial to more schools this Fall. What's your take--how would you use this resource if you had access?
